When you have had an accident, the trouble may not be over. Other potential dangers include:
- Injury while waiting by the accident scene
- Aggravating your own or another's injuries
- Being unfairly blamed or inadvertently sacrificing your case for compensation
If you can remain calm and remember a few things, you will successfully navigate the aftermath of an accident.
Get out of lanes of traffic and set up warnings for bypassing vehicles. If nothing else, raise the hood of your car.
Call 911 and give your location and basic information of the conditions. Do not attempt to move a severely injured person. You could further injure them.
When emergency personnel arrive, be truthful about the event, but do not discuss fault. Describe what happened without editorial comment or interpretation.
Exchange insurance information with other parties and report the incident to your own insurer.
Contact an experienced attorney. Among the counsel you will receive is how to deal with insurers, including those of the other parties. Important: they have ways of getting statements from you that minimize your injuries and may even caste your actions as negligent. Insurance companies do not want to make payments; never mind their TV commercials.
