Handling Injuries Caused by Dangerous Animals Statewide
Anyone who owns an animal is responsible for taking reasonable steps to ensure that the animal doesn't cause injuries to anyone else. This is both a moral imperative and a legal duty. If you, a child or a loved one suffered serious injuries from a dog bite or other animal attack, take steps to recover a settlement that truly compensates you for your damages.
I am Stephen B. Strnad, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, attorney with more than 25 years of experience practicing law. I focus almost exclusively on handling personal injury claims and I have extensive experience handling dog bite cases in particular. No One Can Predict Animal Behavior
Animals are no more predictable than people. A dog that had been friendly and gentle all its life may one day "snap" and viciously attack an adult or child. When this happens, the dog's owner may be responsible for paying compensation for the injuries. Usually, the dog's owner can compensate the victim through a homeowner's insurance policy.
Conversely, many dogs are known to be dangerous. They have a history of aggressive and violent behavior and may have even caused injuries in the past.
Once a dog has bitten someone once, its owner and/or those responsible for the animal have an extra responsibility to supervise that dog and make sure it doesn't attack again. When injuries occur after the first incident, owners and/or those responsible for the animal are often made to pay double damages.
Do Not Accept a Settlement Until You Speak With a Lawyer First
Too often, insurance companies make "low-ball" settlement offers and injured individuals accept them because they don't know how to leverage their rights and demand just treatment. Speak with an attorney to find out if the settlement you are being offered is fair.
Keep in mind that dog bite injuries can cause significant scarring and may cause further medical complications down the road due to possible nerve and vascular damage. You have no way of knowing how much compensation you need. People who are represented by an attorney on average receive higher settlements than those who go it alone.
